The Nobel Peace Prize And The Power Of Words

Today President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Yeah very surprising…or is it?

First of all this post has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with well, us, humans.

With just a few months in office under his belt President Obama has yet to produce significant results. In a world where seemingly all that matters are results, its no wonder that many are angered by his award. Interestingly enough though, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee had a different take on President Obama with their conclusion that “only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.” With that statement I must agree.

I see the point that the US is still heavily engage in 2 wars and that lives are being lost daily. But I’m forced to consider the possibility that creating a deeper dialog regarding peace may be more beneficial in the long run than just ending a war as quickly as possible. With this I’m reminded of the old adage, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

President Obama has done something to the world. Something that cannot be clearly seen, easily measured nor readily understood. He has given us inspiration, hope and confidence that a better future awaits us if we work together in peace and unity. Incredibly so, he has done this with just the power of his words and the eloquence of his speech. Although quite the amazing speaker, this says more about the human potential than the man himself.

We may be skeptical, but in the hearts of the younger generation all across the world, a tiny seed of hope and peace has been planted. I know not when the fruits of this tree will provide for us, but I’m more at ease knowing that although my kids will be growing up in a world that is ever more dangerous, they will also be growing up in a world that is ever more capable of living in peace. No one man can change the world, but many people working together, each doing their part can make a difference.

Whether or not he “deserves” this prize if left for you to decide.
